Our Philosophy

Every senior deserves the right to experience a supportive home environment, which maintains individual integrity and provides a safe place to reflect on their life’s accomplishments.

"It takes a community to support a person in their senior years"

Saint Francis Manor strives to maintain society’s history of caring for seniors in their own homes. We do this by providing a special quality of community within a home atmosphere, rather than just housing.

In addition to proving a caring home, Saint Francis manor strives to be the advocates seniors need in difficult or stressful situations - especially when they might not have loved ones close by to stand up for them.

Carol Ann

Carol Ann felt destined for a life of helping others in times of physical or emotional distress. This manifested in her working as nurse for over 20 years in the Vancouver area.

After too many conversations with elderly patients expressing their feelings of powerlessness over their individual circumstances, Carol Ann knew something more needed to be done to prevent illness in older adults.

Now, as an owner of Saint Francis Manor, Carol Ann goes out of her way to help those under her care.

“My sense of accomplishment comes with helping a person through a difficult medical situation, as their advocate”

Carol Ann will offer to accompany her guests to medical and other appointments, prepare them to ask appropriate questions, listen carefully to what the doctor has said and help her guests choose the best course of action going forward.

Gerard

Inspired by the attention to detail and care his father showed towards the elderly residents at the “Guest House”, Gerard had made it his mission to provide a home to those who have trouble caring for themselves as they age.

They purchased the home that would become Saint Francis Manor in 2000, and renovated it to Vancouver Island Health Authority standards. After successfully winning their proposal to a joint program between the local Health Authority and the Centre on Aging at the University of Victoria, they became a pilot project for better living circumstances for the elderly struggling to get by on a fixed income.

Gerard took charge, making the home accessible to everyone by having an elevator installed. Next, he got a fire impression system put in, and had each unit renovated to receive their own private bathroom with a walking shower.

“Although our obstacles have been many, we are determined to do the right things to help older adults on their journey.  This inspires us to persevere and persist through these obstacles.”

Upon entry to St. Francis we were welcomed from the window. The hospitality and introduction to independent retirement with luxury and nostalgia, warm meals and a family table environment, is quite desirous. Mom is safely dreaming of city excitement close to her grandchildren.
